Buffett becomes the world's richest man
6th March 2008 12:32
Warren Buffett is the world's richest man, according to the annual list compiled by Forbes magazine.
The American investor has usurped his friend Bill Gates, the owner and founder of Microsoft, after amassing an estimated $62 billion.
Mr Buffett's holding is up $10 billion on the same period a year ago and is testament to the ongoing price rise of Berkshire Hathaway stock, of which he is chairman and chief executive.
For Gates the news means he has lost his crown as the world's richest man after 13 straight years - he is worth just $58 billion and has fallen to third behind the Mexican telecoms mogul Carlos Slim Helu. Mr Helu has an estimated net worth of $60 billion, adding $11 billion since last March.
Gates and Buffet have long been friends and the world's new richest man's relationship with the geeky philanthropist is likely to see him fall from his top slot in years to come.
Two years ago Buffett announced he would be giving away the majority of his shares in Berkshire to charity, with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation accounting for a large part of it - potentially a donation of well over $30 billion.
