UPDATE 1-Erdogan says Turkish, Egyptian ministers to meet in process of building ties
27/11/2022 20:01 - RSF
(Adds quotes, details, background)
ISTANBUL, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said in comments broadcast on Sunday that a process of building relations with Egypt will start with ministers of the two countries meeting and that the talks would develop from there.

After years of tension between the two countries, Erdogan shook hands with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Qatar last week in what was described in an Egyptian presidency statement as a new start in bilateral relations between them.

In a televised discussion programme recorded in Turkey's Konya province on Saturday, Erdogan said that he and Sisi had spoken for around half an hour to 45 minutes at that meeting on the sidelines of the World Cup in Qatar.

"We had narrowly focused talks with Mr. Sisi there and said now let's have ministers coming and going at a low level. After that, let's broaden and widen these talks," Erdogan said, also signalling the possibility of improving ties with rival Syria.

"Just as this business is now on track with Egypt, things may also get on track with Syria," he said.

Ankara's ties with Cairo have been strained since Sisi, then Egypt's army chief, led the 2013 ouster of Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, who was strongly supported by Erdogan.

The two countries started consultations between senior foreign ministry officials last year amid a push by Turkey to ease tensions with Egypt, the UAE, Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Egypt private sector shrinks in November after devaluation -PMI
Oggi 05:18 - RSF
CAIRO, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Egypt's non-oil private sector shrank in November at its sharpest rate since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020, with a weaker currency weighing on the cost and the availability of foreign goods, a survey showed on Monday.

The S&P Global Egypt Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) slid to 45.4 in November from 47.7 in October, well below the 50.0 threshold that separates growth from contraction.

It was the second lowest reading since the pandemic dragged the index down in June, 2020, and the 24th consecutive month of contraction.

"Central to the downturn was a rapid decrease in business activity, as survey panellists reported that accelerated cost rises and falling new orders forced them to cut output," S&P Global said.

Egypt has been suffering a severe shortage of foreign currency despite a 14.5% devaluation on Oct. 27 and the announcement of a $3 billion support package with the International Monetary Fund. The lack of dollars has tightened the flow of imports for factory and retail inputs.

"The pound's depreciation against the US dollar led to a marked increase in prices paid for raw materials, which have already been exacerbated by import restrictions since early-2022," said S&P Global economist David Owen.

The PMI's sub-indices for both overall input prices and purchase prices deteriorated to 72.4, their highest since July 2018, from October's 63.5.

The sub-index for future output expectations improved to 55.7 after falling to a record low of 52.2 in October.

"Concerns about high inflation, rising interest rates, currency weakness and a global economic slowdown remained dampeners on sentiment," S&P said.

POLL-Egypt inflation seen jumping to 18.75% in November, post-devaluation
06/12/2022 19:12 - RSF
By Patrick Werr
CAIRO, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Headline inflation in Egypt is likely to have sped up in November, a Reuters poll showed on Tuesday, after a currency devaluation in October and continued restrictions on imports put renewed upward pressure on prices.

The median forecast of 14 analysts showed annual inflation at 18.75% in November, up from 16.2% in October and the highest since December 2017.

Jaap Meijer, head of research at Arqaam Capital, attributed the faster price increases to "higher import bills".

The central bank imposed restrictions on imports in February before the Ukrainian crisis and has been devaluing the currency since March. On Oct. 27 it cut the Egyptian pound's price by 14.5% and since then has been letting it weaken gradually.

"The currency had moved 25% from a year before, and that would add 2.5-5 percentage points in any country, and we're up 10 percentage points," said Charles Robertson, chief economist at Renaissance Capital.

"So foreign exchange was probably responsible for a third (of the price increases from) a year ago, oil maybe one-fifth and global wheat prices at least one-tenth. Together two-thirds of the rise would be easily attributable to the Egyptian pound, oil and food to end-October 2022."
The analysts polled predicted that core inflation would jump to 21.60% from 19% in October.

The higher inflation would put pressure on the central bank to raise interest rates when it next meets on Dec. 22.

The state statistics agency CAPMAS will release inflation data for November on Thursday.

UPDATE 1-Egypt lifts import curbs, backs bigger private sector role to meet IMF demands
29/12/2022 16:43 - RSF
(recasts with import restrictions lift)
CAIRO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Egypt on Thursday lifted a key restriction on imports and approved a list of economic activities the government would leave to the private sector, in an effort to meet two key conditions attached to the International Monetary Fund's $3 billion support package.

In a statement, the central bank said it dropped a requirement for importers to use letters of credit and the government will now allow direct payment.

The condition, introduced in February to ease a dollar crunch that was exacerbated by the Ukraine conflict, has drawn complaints from businesses and caused shortages of a variety of imported goods.

Despite the curbs and two major devaluations this year, Egypt still faces foreign currency shortage and earlier this month secured the 46-month financial support from the IMF, for which the reversal of the import curbs was a key requirement.

The agreement also called for the government to list economic activities that the state would withdraw from.

Earlier on Thursday, the cabinet said that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi approved a list of 62 economic activities the state would leave to the private sector, giving it a greater role in helping to grow the economy, create jobs and increase investment and exports.

The government statement did not specify those activities, but in May Egypt outlined an array of state assets that would be offered to private investors, including in sectors such as electric vehicles, data centres, and oil and gas networks.
