LONDON (AP) -- Vodafone Group PLC said Thursday it has completed the sale of Vodafone Japan to a wholly owned subsidiary of Softbank Corp.
The sale of Vodafone Group's 97.68 stake valued Vodafone Japan at 1.8 trillion yen ($15.7 billion).
Vodafone will make a special distribution of 6 billion pounds ($10.7 billion), equivalent to about 10 pence ($0.18) per share, to shareholders following its annual general meeting on July 25.
"This transaction enhances Vodafone's adjusted earnings per share and facilitates the return of approximately 6 billion pounds to our shareholders," said Vodafone Chief Executive Arun Sarin. "We maintain a strong relationship with SoftBank and we look forward to continuing to benefit from insights in the important Japanese mobile market."
The deal will boost Tokyo-based Softbank's foray into the cell phone business, allowing it to take over the more than 15 million Japanese users who have signed on to the carrier, as well as its mobile network, instead of building it from scratch.
Vodafone, the world's largest mobile phone company by revenue, had faced tough competition from NTT DoCoMo and KDDI Corp., the two biggest mobile phone companies in Japan.
Sarin had been under pressure from investors as the company's share of the Japanese market had shrunk over the past two years after it delayed the launch of third-generation, or 3G, services in the region.
Vodafone shares rose 0.4 percent to 128.25 pence ($2.29) on the London Stock Exchange. Softbank shares closed at 2,930 yen ($25.49), down 1 percent.
