Philip Morris International & Tobacco Companies

Philip Morris 2009 Profit Forecast Misses Analysts’ Estimates

Feb. 4 -- Philip Morris International Inc., the world’s largest publicly traded tobacco company, gave a full-year profit forecast that missed analysts’ estimates, hurt by the strengthening dollar.

Profit this year will fall to $2.85 to $3 a share from $3.32 in 2008, Philip Morris said in a statement today. Analysts anticipated $3.41, the average of 12 estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Excluding the projected 80-cent impact of foreign- currency exchange rates, profit would rise as much as 14 percent, the company said.

The dollar “should swallow up all of 2009’s underlying growth,” Jonathan Fell, a Deutsche Bank AG analyst in London, wrote in a Feb. 2 note to clients. He recommends buying Philip Morris shares.

Philip Morris generates all of its sales outside of the U.S. Last year’s acquisition of Canada’s Rothmans Inc., engineered by Chief Executive Officer Louis Camilleri, as well as higher cigarette prices helped lift fourth-quarter revenue 2.2 percent to $15.2 billion.

The ICE’s Dollar Index, which tracks the dollar versus the euro, the yen, the pound, the Canadian dollar, the Swedish krona and the Swiss franc, increased 2.3 percent in the fourth quarter as investors sought refuge in the world’s reserve currency.

Philip Morris fell $1.10, or 2.9 percent, to $37.22 at 10:38 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Before today, the shares had dropped 12 percent this year.

Net income fell to $1.45 billion, or 71 cents a share in the fourth quarter, from $1.57 billion, or 74 cents, a year earlier, New York-based Philip Morris said. Twelve analysts estimated 62 cents on average in a Bloomberg survey.

Mexico, Indonesia

Philip Morris sold more cigarettes in Mexico and Indonesia, where some smokers are trading up to Marlboro from local brands.

Philip Morris said yesterday it will jointly sell snuff with Swedish Match AB, Europe’s largest maker of smokeless tobacco. The companies will license their trademarks to a joint venture, which will sell Swedish snuff, known as snus, and other smokeless tobacco products worldwide outside of Scandinavia and the U.S.

Philip Morris, which owned 40 percent of Toronto-based Rothmans, bought the rest of Canada’s second-biggest tobacco producer last year for $2 billion.

+9,32% in 5 sedute!

13° Settimana: "The first quarter is in the books", tempo di resoconti dopo 3 mesi esatti di simulazione.

PM -> 54 cents

MO -> 32 cents

RAI -> 85 cents

OK!

Altria’s Profit Meets Analysts’ Estimates After Price Boosts

April 22 -- Altria Group Inc., the largest U.S. tobacco company, posted first-quarter profit that met analysts’ projections after raising cigarette prices.

Earnings from continuing operations increased to 39 cents a share from 37 cents a year earlier, the Richmond, Virginia-based company said today in a Business Wire statement. That matched the average of 12 analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Altria’s Philip Morris USA division has raised cigarette prices three times since December to blunt the loss of smokers expected when U.S. tobacco taxes jumped by 62 cents a pack April 1. As retailers and distributors cut inventories in late March to avoid paying the higher tax, shipments by the cigarette maker sank 14.2 percent, less than the 15 percent drop projected by Adam Spielman, a Citigroup Inc. analyst in London.

The popularity of Marlboro may have muted Altria’s decline in shipments, Spielman said in a March 27 note to clients. He recommends buying Altria shares.

Chief Executive Officer Michael Szymanczyk engineered the $10.4 billion acquisition of UST Inc. in January to bolster revenue growth from snuff brands Skoal and Copenhagen, after cigarette shipments slipped 3.2 percent last year.

Philip Morris Price Boosts Help Profit Top Estimates

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Philip Morris International Inc., the world’s largest publicly traded tobacco company, reported a smaller drop in first-quarter profit than analysts expected because of cigarette price increases.

Net income declined to $1.48 billion, or 74 cents a share, from $1.67 billion, or 79 cents, a year earlier, the New York- based maker of Marlboro cigarettes said today in a statement. Analysts expected profit of 70 cents, the average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Price boosts in Greece, Russia, Indonesia and other markets contributed $358 million, helping limit a $697 million reduction in sales because of the stronger U.S. dollar. Revenue at Philip Morris, which generates all of its sales outside of the U.S., sank 7.4 percent and Marlboro shipments slipped 2.4 percent.

The company beat earnings estimates with “strong prices offsetting weak volumes,” Thilo Wrede, a Credit Suisse analyst in New York, wrote today in a note to clients. He rates Philip Morris as “neutral.”

Philip Morris rose 75 cents to $37 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have slumped 28 percent since the spinoff of Philip Morris by Altria Group Inc. on March 28, 2008.

Chief Financial Officer Hermann Waldemer addressed concerns among some investors that the global recession may be weighing on demand for Philip Morris cigarettes and slowing expansion of top-selling Marlboro in emerging markets.

Prices Increases

“We have retained our ability to increase prices in order to boost our profitability,” Waldemer said on a conference call. The company plans price increases in markets including Germany and has seen no “global consumer downtrading” among smokers switching to rivals’ less expensive cigarettes, he said.

Revenue fell to $13.3 billion and Marlboro shipments slipped to 71.1 billion cigarettes.

Philip Morris affirmed its February forecast to earn $2.85 a share to $3 a share in 2009. Profit may reach the high end of the range if currencies remain steady, Waldemer said. Analysts projected profit of $2.98.

Chief Executive Officer Louis Camilleri boosted sales in Canada and Latin America by 11 percent with last year’s acquisition of Rothmans Inc. Philip Morris bought the 60 percent of Canada’s second-largest tobacco producer it didn’t already own.

Sales advanced 5.8 percent in Asia. They dropped in the European Union and in the region that encompasses Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, largely because of the stronger dollar.
