Senate OKs regulation of tobacco by FDA

WASHINGTON -- The Senate approved legislation Thursday that would give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco for the first time.

The bill, approved by a 79-17 vote, is similar to one already approved by the House. The House is expected to vote again Friday. A final bill is expected to land on President Barack Obama's desk next week. Read more about the bill.

"It will make history by giving the scientists and medical experts at the FDA the power to take sensible steps that will reduce tobacco's harmful effects and prevent tobacco companies from marketing their products to children," Obama said Thursday.

Obama himself is a smoker who has struggled to quit.

The bill would give the FDA broad authority to regulate the manufacture and marketing of all forms of tobacco. The FDA could ban some additives in cigarettes and could require tobacco companies to reduce levels of nicotine, the addictive stimulant in tobacco. It would require larger and more aggressive warning labels, including the blunt statement "Smoking can kill you."

Several senators who have lost family members to smoking-related diseases spoke passionately about the dangers of smoking. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, noted that the tobacco industry has to recruit 1,000 new smokers a day to replace those who've died.

A new Center for Tobacco Products would be created inside the FDA, funded by fees on tobacco companies. The retail price of tobacco will likely rise.

Hai fatto bene ;)

Swedish Match sells South Africa ops to Philip Morris

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Swedish Match said Thursday that it will sell its South African operations to Philip Morris International for 1.75 billion South African rand ($224 million). The transaction is subject to approval by the South African Competition Authority and is expected to be completed during the second half of 2009.

Altria Profit Rises 8.6% on Cigarette Price Increases

July 22 (Bloomberg) -- Altria Group Inc., the largest U.S. tobacco company, reported second-quarter profit rose 8.6 percent after cigarette price increases, and raised its full-year forecast.
Net income advanced to $1.01 billion, or 49 cents a share, from $930 million, or 45 cents, a year earlier, the Richmond, Virginia-based maker of Marlboro cigarettes said today in a statement. Excluding some items, adjusted earnings were 50 cents a share, beating the 47-cent average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
Altria’s Philip Morris USA raised prices on cigarettes in December, February and March, before the U.S. government boosted taxes by 62 cents a pack April 1. Altria, led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael Szymanczyk, also plans stop to production in one of its two U.S. cigarette factories July 29, part of $1.5 billion the company expects to save by 2011.
“It’s a matter of maintaining the existing level of demand,” said Peter Jankovskis, who helps manage $1.3 billion, including Altria shares, at Oakbrook Investments in Lisle, Illinois. “They’re keeping their costs as low as possible.”
Altria fell 3 cents to $17.30 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have advanced 15 percent this year.
The company forecast adjusted earnings from continuing operations will be $1.72 to $1.77 a share in 2009, up from a January forecast of $1.70 to $1.75. Profit on that basis was $1.65 in 2008.

Snuff Sales

Revenue in the second quarter climbed 33 percent to $6.72 billion after Altria acquired UST, the largest U.S. producer of smokeless tobacco, in January, and raised cigarette prices by as much as 81 cents a pack in March.
Adjusted profit excluded costs from the integration of UST and gains on the issuance of common stock by brewer SABMiller Plc, based in London. Adjusted earnings were 46 cents in the second quarter of 2008.
Marlboro, the top-selling U.S. cigarette, lost market share in the second quarter, falling to 41.2 percent from 41.8 percent a year earlier, as competitors increased promotions to counter higher U.S. taxes, Chief Financial Officer David Beran said on a conference call today.
As rivals’ promotions eased during the latter part of the quarter, Marlboro’s market share recovered and had risen back to 42.4 percent at the end of June, Beran said.
Philip Morris USA plans to close its cigarette factory in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, this month. The number of workers has shrunk from 2,500 two years ago through a combination of retirements, transfers to a Richmond factory and job eliminations, David Sylvia, an Altria spokesman, said yesterday in an e-mail.
Cost savings totaled $25 million in the second quarter, bringing this year’s total to $165 million, Altria said. Pretax charges of $47 million in the quarter and $84 million in the first six months resulted primarily from the factory closing.

Philip Morris International Profit Tops Analysts’ Estimates

July 23 (Bloomberg) -- Philip Morris International Inc., the world’s largest publicly traded tobacco company, reported a smaller drop in second-quarter profit than analysts anticipated, helped by cigarette price increases.
Earnings were 83 cents a share, excluding some items, the New York-based maker of Marlboro cigarettes said today in a statement distributed by Business Wire. Analysts anticipated 77 cents, the average of 11 estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
Price increases in Argentina, Germany, Russia and other major markets added to earnings in the quarter, while cigarette shipments were little changed. Revenue at Philip Morris, which generates all of its revenue outside of the U.S., declined 8.9 percent to $15.2 billion.
Philip Morris raised its 2009 profit forecast, saying currency fluctuations will hurt earnings less than it anticipated. It expects to earn $3.10 to $3.20 this year, higher than its February forecast of $2.85 to $3 a share.
Some analysts such as Christopher Growe of Stifel Nicolaus & Co. in St. Louis already raised their full-year expectations because of currency changes, pushing the average estimate to $3.11 a share.
Through yesterday, the U.S. currency had fallen over the past month against all 16 most-traded currencies tracked by Bloomberg. The dollar’s decline helps revenue by increasing the value of overseas sales when converted to the U.S. currency.

Philip Morris Profit Increases on Higher Cigarette Prices

July 22 -- Philip Morris International Inc., the world’s largest publicly traded tobacco company, posted a 28 percent gain in second-quarter profit after raising cigarette prices in countries such as Australia and Mexico.
Net income advanced to $1.98 billion, or $1.07 a share, the New York-based company said today in a statement. Excluding some items, earnings were $1, compared with the 97-cent average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg. The company also raised its full-year profit forecast.
The price increases have helped Philip Morris, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, make up for falling shipments as the slumping European economy and tax increases sap demand. Revenue rose 14 percent to $17.4 billion, with favorable foreign exchange adding $419 million. All Philip Morris’s sales come from outside the U.S.
Philip Morris fell 74 cents to $49.89 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares had gained 3.5 percent this year before today, compared with a 4.1 percent drop in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.
Pricing added $341 million to sales last quarter. A year earlier, profit in the period was $1.55 billion, or 79 cents a share.

April 20, 2012 7:38 AM EDT

Jefferies bumped its price target on Philip Morris (NYSE: PM) higher from $89 to $91 after "very impressive" 1Q12 adj. EPS of $1.25, beating the firm's forecast by 2 cents and consensus by 5 cents.

The firm comments, "PM’s top 10 brands seem to be firing on all cylinders and volume and pricing (LatAm/Canada being a minor exception) were stronger than we thought. Despite the strength, we expect PM to trade sideways for the next few months due to its high valuation (esp. relative to BAT), currency concerns and the Japan headwind for 2Q12."

Jefferies cut from Q2 EPS from $1.38 to $1.35, FY12 was raised from $5.20 to $5.22 and FY13 was raised from $5.85 to $5.91.

..........
The power of dividend investing is often underappreciated. They can be powerful portfolio supporters, providing income even during market downturns.

Plenty of dividend payers had strong performances over the past year. Tobacco powerhouses Altria (NYSE: MO ) and Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM ) gained 25% and 31%, respectively, over the past year, and recently yielded 5.4% and 3.9%. They both benefit from customers literally addicted to their wares, but they also face increasingly restrictive legislation and rising taxes in many locations. Those factors are strong in the U.S., where the population of smokers is shrinking as well. Philip Morris International has it easier abroad, as many nations feature far fewer restrictions, but those are growing, too. In its last quarter, Philip Morris reported a 6% drop in income because of shrinking volume despite higher prices.

A me piacciono molto le inglesi, BAT e Imperial Tobacco (Gauloises, Davidoff, West..): buoni risultati, buona politica dividendi.
