Ukraine to stop killing stray dogs before Euro 2012 football championship
Ukraine has bowed to pressure from western animal protection groups and called for an end to the killing of stray dogs before the Euro 2012 football championship takes place in the country next summer.
The environment ministry said on Thursday that it was urging all Ukraine's mayors to build animal shelters instead.
Thousands of stray dogs have been killed in Ukraine over the past year – often poisoned or injected with illegal substances in an effort to clear the streets before the championship takes place in June – outraging local and international animal protection groups.
"Today I am publicly turning to all city mayors – let us stop the deaths of those poor stray animals for half a year and build shelters together," Mykola Zlochevsky, the environment minister, told a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
The statement followed a meeting with representatives of Naturewatch, a British group campaigning against animal cruelty in Ukraine. "This is a fantastic victory for Ukraine, its citizens and its animals," John Ruane, the head of Naturewatch, said.
It remained unclear how the ban would be enforced. Ukraine has a large stray dog population, numbering tens of thousands in big cities, and building shelters to house the animals would take months.
Slaughter of stray cats and dogs for Euro 2012 condemned by animal lovers
Thousands of stray dogs and cats have been slaughtered in the Ukraine in a bid to tidy up the streets for Euro 2012.
Earlier this month the Kiev government said it was to stop shooting or poisoning strays after a public outcry.
The authorities ordered that strays should be rounded up and taken to animal 'shelters'.
But Judith Pein, of the German branch of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), claimed the slaughter was still happening.
She told the Sun: 'It would be cruel to do this anyway, but to do it for football is outrageous. The people at these so-called shelters told us these were old and ill dogs, but there were puppies in there.'
In the capital Kiev, the group says as many as 20,000 have been slain in the past year.
A PETA UK spokesman said: 'These killings are directly related to Ukraine hosting Euro 2012. Dog-killing is a profitable business.'
PETA said it was not aware of strays being killed in Poland.
UKRAINE: FOOTBALL MATCHES FINISHED AND DOGS CONTINUES TO BE KILLED | OIPA
Despite what declared by the Ukraine authorities and UEFA, the massacre of stray dogs still going on.
As a matter of fact, dogs continue to be killed at night and in the most brutal ways including: poisoning, electroshock guns or even thrown into concrete while still alive. These killers just shoot the dogs with narcotics, or they just inject them with narcotizes, as the dogs are friendly and not afraid by the human presence. Afterwards, dogs are thrown into mass graves alive and cemented alive.
This story comes to us directly from Kiev, where an Italian photographer, Andrea Cisternino, is reporting the killings and mass massacre with photos, videos and information which are directly posted to Facebook. We are also in contact with Alexandra Mexinova, an Ukrainian animal activist owner of a dog pound with 1.500 dogs and 500 cats.
