In week 1, we will begin by learning about the foundations of finance, i.e., the history of finance and its role in society. We will then learn about asset classes such as stocks and bonds, about investment vehicles such as mutual funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs), and about derivatives.
During week 2, we will turn to more fundamental concepts of finance. We will, for example, learn why one euro received today is worth more than one euro received in the future, and how we can compare cash flows received in the future with cash flows received today. In addition, we will find out what an interest rate is and why long-term interest rates are typically higher than short-term interest rates. Finally, we will discover the power of compound interest.
In week 3, we will learn about risk and return, and, more specifically, why returns are a compensation for taking on more risk. We will then discover the magic of diversification, which is one of the most important themes covered in this course. Diversification means that “one should not put all eggs in one basket”. Diversification can be considered the only free lunch in finance.
During week 4, we will explore concepts such as market efficiency, the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), and anomalies versus risk factors. Finally, we will touch upon the subject of financial technology, or FinTech.
During week 5, we will learn about risk aversion and how your age and investment horizon might affect your investment strategy. We will learn the basics of portfolio theory, initially discovered in the 1950s by Nobel Laureate, Professor Harry Markowitz. Finally, how should an investor decide on whether to invest in an actively or a passively managed fund? And, should an investor focus on stock picking or investing in a low-cost index fund?
During week 6, we will turn our focus to broader questions of economics. That is, we will learn about market crashes, and find out what a bank run is. Also, we will discuss the role of central banks and find out their role in a monetary and financial system. Finally, we also touch on the subject of negative interest rates, which have prevailed since the financial crisis in 2008 in several major economies, and why they are so puzzling to economists.
Finally, week 7 provides a unique practitioner’s view into topics in finance and wealth management. Listen to Dr Björn Wahlroos, the foremost lead educator in this course, and his thoughts on wealth management and investing in general, as well as on other topics related to finance and economics.
