UPDATE 1-Alitalia denies loan report22.02.2008 09:57:00
(Adds more details, share price)
MILAN, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Cash-strapped Italian airline
Alitalia denied a media report on Friday that it may
receive a state-backed loan to keep it afloat until it concludes
a potential deal with Air France-KLM .
The state-controlled airline, which is in exclusive talks to
be bought by Air France-KLM, has repeatedly warned it needs a
750 million euro ($1.11 billion) cash infusion by mid-year to
keep flying solo.
Banks backed by the state may provide the carrier with a 300
million euro loan to avoid the risk that it would run out of
cash if the takeover process drags on until June, business
newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore reported, citing sources.
"Alitalia denies that, at the moment, there are any specific
initiatives in that sense," the carrier said in a statement.
Shares in Alitalia were down 0.27 percent at 0.662 euros at
0846 GMT, in line with the blue-chip S&P/MIB index <.SPMIB>.
A lawsuit by smaller domestic
rival Air One has also
complicated Alitalia's plans. Air One is looking to re-enter the
competition to buy Alitalia with a new offer.
An Italian court rejected Air One's request to suspend the
exclusive talks between Alitalia and Air France-KLM
until a
final verdict. Italian newspapers on Friday reported Air One
could launch its own buyout bid for Alitalia.
An Air One spokesman declined to comment on the reports.
Italy's outgoing economy minister, whose ministry excluded
Air One in
favour of Air France-KLM as its preferred partner for
Alitalia, this month said the smaller airline could still make a
counter-bid on the market since Alitalia is a publicly quoted
company.
